A Beijing Love Story: "Our First Date Was On Christmas Day 2018"
A Beijing Christmas Love Story
Nick and Song are a couple in Beijing who had their first date on Christmas Day in 2018.
They've been together for 2 years now and share more about their date, first impressions of each other, and how their relationship has grown since then.
Meet Song and Nick
Song: Hey guys, I’m Wang Song from Harbin, the frozen tundra of China. I’ve been in Beijing for 6 years.
Nick: My name is Nicholas Manser. I’m from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. 3 years.
How did you meet each other?
We met the old fashion way, in the club. Nick saw Song dancing on the stage at club Mix. (From Nick: FYI she’s very hot and she’s an amazing dancer). He thought he had to be creative to get her attention. So he caught a paper heart that fell from the ceiling, and gave it to her.
Nick said to Song, "I will take you on a date when we're sober later."
And 2 days later on Christmas Day in 2018, they went on their first date.
What did you do for your first date on Christmas?
We went to the Local for our first date. After that we took a stroll under the Christmas lights of Sanlitun. We couldn’t stop making out in public, and we licked off the ice cream from each other’s lips.
How would you rate your first date?
Song: 9 out of 10. Wish it could been longer.
Nick: 9 out of 10. No sex.
Were there instant sparks?
After the third date we were crazy about each other. It was 2 days after the first date. And the next 2 weeks we did different activities everyday: Latin dance, shisha lounge, skate boarding and going to the gym.
We officially got together just before we both went home for Chinese New Year. 3 weeks after we met!
Have you had any cultural miscommunication since you are from different countries?
Yes, of course. But we found a way to be windows to each others’ cultures. We appreciate each others differences. It adds color to our life.
What have you learned after dating for 2 years?
Lots of open communication. Always try to remember the positive times more than the negative. Our differences tie us together.
It's difficult to get across the line of trying to behave perfectly in front of your partner in the beginning. It takes time to let down your walls. It takes a lot of effort to build up trust to each other, to feel safe and comfortable sharing all your feelings.
If you want to make it work, action speaks louder than words. When Song’s thinking, Nick’s doing.
How will you celebrate Christmas this year?
We open presents. We have a day of spontaneity ahead. We always try to have spontaneous dates to celebrate!
